If you do what everybody else does, then you will get what everybody else gets. I think you want more than that, don’t you? You see most people don’t know it, but they are really just drifting in life from one thing to another as one obstacle after another bumps up against them and changes their life’s direction. Eventually, most people end up floating down the streams of life without a paddle and any real self-direction. They just go wherever the currents of life takes them. I think you can do better than that don’t you?
I can’t help but also think of the great California Gold Rush. An enormous amount of people gave up everything they had to take a chance as a gold miner. Thousands made the perilous trek to California or Alaska in the hope of striking gold. Many lost their lives just trying to get there and many more lost their lives panning for gold once they were there. Only a few found gold. The others who lived long enough to leave that land limped home broken and ruined.
Now we all love the idea of a rugged American taking a chance and relying only on his or her wits and hitting pay dirt. We love the old classic Andrew Carnegie story of rags to riches and all the other countless success stories of broke people that have made it big against all odds. I want to make it real clear that I am not telling anyone not to chase their dreams or to take a chance. What I’m telling people is to take an educated and calculated risk. This will help ensure that we are not just blindly following the masses to our doom, and we really do have a chance to succeed.
Now teens, go learn, lead, and lay the way to a better world for all of us. Remember that when everyone is floating downstream, that may be the best time for you to swim upstream. And once again, thanks in advance for all that you do, and all that you will do…
