I am a big fan of hypnosis.

I strongly think – no, I know – that with more and much better hypnosis on the planet, we ‘d resolve so many ‘unsolvable’ problems.

Sure, that’s true of numerous things. The world would be a better place with more and much better education, medication, food, empathy …

However hypnosis is a remarkable force multiplier. A little more can create huge improvements – for society and for you.

Having said that …

It’s a tool like any other.

Which indicates through malice or carelessness, it can trigger damage.

Iron can make a bridge or a weapon … or you can drop a bar of it on your foot.

It’s not always smiles and sunshine.

You most likely expect me to talk about mind control – about hypnotising folks into robbing banks or something. It’s true that hypnosis is a powerful form of influence – and that this sort of thing might happen.

You can unwind.

If hypnosis is mind control – and even an effective method of influence – there are surprisingly few confirmed cases of this happening. I’m not saying it never ever takes place … however, for a criminal, hypnosis would be the supreme tool of the trade. All the benefits of criminal activity with none of the danger? Why would they rob a bank any other method?

When you’re hypnotised, it’s normally more difficult to go against your values. In your waking state, someone can always talk you into overlooking the little voice in your head that tells you right from wrong.

In a hypnotic trance, you’re more real to who you are.

Sure, sure, there are experiments and documentaries where they hypnotise a typical individual into ‘assassinating’ a target, using a gun filled with blanks.

Psychological experiments drop if anybody involved is a bad actor – anyone at all.

Anyway, you’re not likely to be hypnotised into doing something that significant.

If somebody abuses hypnosis on you, it’ll be more subtle.

There are individuals in this world who will use hypnosis versus you. They’ll install worries and insecurities, then exploit them for their own use.

I don’t know why they bother. I’ve fulfilled folks like that. Although they were rich and successful, individuals in their lives were … broken. They ‘d speak about the happiest or scariest moment of their life with the exact same flat voice and dead gaze.

If they used hypnosis to empower people, they ‘d still be rich and successful … and surrounded by happy, healthy good friends and fans.

Narcissists (in the psychological sense, not the casual “that guy is so arrogant!” sense) can use individuals down and leave them like this, with or without hypnosis. With it, they can do it in a discussion.

Even if you neglect malicious uses of it …

Hypnosis is an effective tool that deals with the structures of your mind. With the ideal training and attitude, it’s safe. With poor training, however, it can make a mess of your unconscious.

At the risk of humblebragging for hypnosis, it can even be too reliable – bringing you into contact with quelched issues you’re not ready for.

Like all power, it should have regard and care. With those basic things, hypnosis can be the force for good it truly is.
